Back in March, the People Team decided to step away from their desks for the day to get their volunteer on! Volunteering opportunities have been few and far between since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, luckily for us, Watford Mencap’s Children's Centre were in need of a helping hand to get their garden and play equipment ready for the summer!
With the sunny weather making an appearance for us and one of Mencap’s service users baking us some delicious brownies and banana bread to fuel us for our day ahead, we were ready to get started.
The Fundraising Team at Watford Mencap set us our tasks for the day which included tidying and sweeping the car park, cleaning the outside play equipment and patio furniture - as well as sweeping and clearing the leaves from the playground. We split into two teams and got to work!
A few hours later and it was time for a pub lunch. Watford Mencap moved into their current location in April 2021 which was very handy for us as the pub was less than a 5 minute walk away… After a lovely lunch (and several diet cokes later) we were ready to get back to it. More sweeping and cleaning was done and within a couple more hours, we were all finished!
We all learnt a great deal from this volunteering experience (Matt especially as he learnt the difference between weeds and plants!) and were so impressed by the volunteers who dedicate their time to this fantastic charity.
It was a great day and we’d all highly recommend finding some time to volunteer.
