On 23rd March 2020, Boris Johnson announced the first UK-wide lockdown as a result of Covid-19. And there’s no denying it - the year that has followed has been a tough one for many of us. But rather than focusing on the challenges and hurdles the pandemic introduced, we want to bring you a story of positivity, and tell you all about how we’ve embraced change here at Camelot.
Our people came first
Most of the country hadn’t heard of the term ‘furlough’ until last year. But luckily for us, it wasn’t a word we had to introduce, because we kept all our people employed and on full pay. In fact, we even continued hiring, bringing in another 200+ amazing people who have already made a huge impact. This meant we had to get creative with welcoming our new starters, so we introduced virtual onboarding days (we’ve already held 27 of these), to make sure they still received the warm welcome that they deserved.
Technology became more important than ever
One of the biggest challenges we had to overcome was setting our people up for success when moving to home working. With 90% of the company setting up camp in their living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, or home offices - for those lucky few - our Technology Team has been kept very busy! But they have well and truly embraced the challenge, managing over 700 individual requests for IT equipment.
We made changes to our offices
Keeping our essential workers safe and healthy was obviously essential to us. Which is why we made our offices COVID-safe as soon as possible. We introduced many new safety measures to our office buildings, including enhancing our air ventilation, social distancing reminders, mask-wearing, temperature checkers and sanitiser dispensers - to name a few.
Physical and mental wellbeing of our people has been our number one priority
We introduced a number of initiatives to support the wellbeing of our people, from virtual after school classes to occupy their children, additional parental leave to support homeschooling, to step challenges to encourage us to get outside during the cold winter months. The exercise didn’t end there though, we’ve also been holding virtual exercise classes that offer something for everyone, whether that’s yoga or boxfit.
However, wellbeing extends beyond physical fitness and we care about our people’s mental health too, with the intention of offering everyone ‘A Place To Be You’. That’s why over the past year, we’ve recognised a number of different wellbeing events with virtual sessions, blogs, video content and competitions. These include:

- LGBT+ History Month
- Women’s History Month
- Stress Awareness Month
And we supported our community
As well as caring for our own people, we also played a big role in supporting those around us. As the operator of The National Lottery, we're proud that, thanks to its players, over £1 billion in National Lottery funding has now been distributed to those affected by coronavirus.
