The value of the lottery Benefiting lives across the UK

As the licensed operator of The National Lottery, our activities touch lives across the UK. We aim to benefit society by raising as much money as possible for the Good Causes through the sale of National Lottery products. We also want to provide great value to all those involved in doing so – our employees, the hundreds of companies with which we do business, and the players and winners who enjoy our games.

Camelot is one of the most cost-efficient lotteries in the world and since winning the Licence to operate The National Lottery for the third time in 2009, we have been through a major reorganisation to ensure we are as lean as efficient as possible. To date, our players have raised over £24 billion for the Good Causes, funding more than 330,000 individual awards – an average of around 110 lottery grants per postcode. While we are responsible for generating these funds, we play no role in the allocation of funding. For more information on how the funds are distributed see 'Supporting the Good Causes'.

In addition to the money we raise for the Good Causes, our activities also have an economic impact on other stakeholders, from winners to retailers, the Government to suppliers. We provide employment and training for staff and invest in the communities in which we operate. In this section, we focus on these economic impacts. We describe the non-financial benefits of our business for players, employees and communities in the following chapters.
