About Camelot What we do and how we do it

We have run the UK National Lottery since it was founded in 1994. In December 2009, Royal Mail Enterprises Ltd joined the four other shareholders – Cadbury Holdings Ltd, De La Rue Holdings plc, Fujitsu Services Ltd and Thales Electronics plc – in reviewing options for their interests in Camelot. This resulted in all five agreeing to sell their shareholdings in Camelot to Premier Lotteries UK Limited, a subsidiary of Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (Teachers'), in March 2010. Subject to final approval from The National Lottery's regulator, the National Lottery Commission (NLC), Teachers' will become our new owner later this year. We employ 7611 employees (full time equivalent) and work with a network of more than 28,500 retailers.

Our strategy

As operator of The National Lottery, our goal is to maximise returns to the Good Causes in an efficient and socially responsible way. Our long-term strategy for responsible growth is based on offering players a regularly-refreshed portfolio of games, together with innovative and convenient new ways to play.

This involves designing, marketing and promoting new games, developing and running the lottery infrastructure, providing services for players and winners, and working in partnership with retailers. Our long-term strategy for realising this goal is to encourage many people to play, but to spend relatively little. For the majority of people, playing the National Lottery is an occasional flutter, however we realise that our products may be harmful to a small number of vulnerable groups. We see it as our responsibility to minimise the potential negative impacts of our products on society through our robust responsible play measures.

Our games and how to play them

We provide a range of draw-based games and Scratchcards through our network of retailers, and many innovative Instant Win games via our website. The majority of our consumers play draw-based games through their local retailer, but an increasing number play through our website, or via their mobile phone.

Our vision

To serve nations' dreams with integrity, and diversify, with a flourishing UK National Lottery at our heart.

Our values

Our values are fundamental to the success of our business and The Lottery, and remain the mainstay of our approach. Our values are:

  • We believe in fair play for our people
  • We behave with integrity
  • We want to be trusted to deliver
  • We work as a team
  • We seek excellence in everything we do
  • We discharge our responsibilities to all our stakeholders

Our approach to corporate responsibility

Our company vision and values provide the foundation for our approach to corporate responsibility. Putting our values into practice, upholding our commitment to corporate responsibility and – above all – maintaining public trust is of utmost importance to operating The National Lottery with integrity.

This can only be done through well-established governance structures, a strong focus on consumer protection and by putting stakeholder engagement at the heart of what we do to address social and environmental impacts.
