Our Responsibilities Managing talent and performance

The talents of our employees are an essential asset of our business.

We have changed the way we manage and reward performance to reflect its strategic importance to our core business and our plans for diversification and growth.

In 2009/10 we replaced our existing performance management process with a new Developing Performance and Potential (DPP) system. This approach has helped conversations about performance to be as consistent, clear, open and specific as possible.

Under the DPP system, employees are encouraged to demonstrate our values in their work, and their performance is measured against them. The results will inform pay recommendations in a consistent and fair way.

The system is based on the following principles:

• Everyone knows what is expected of them, what they do and the way they do it
• Everyone understands how their work contributes to the Company's success and to the good causes
• Everyone has regular conversations about how they can improve their performance
• Everyone has the opportunity to talk about their career aspirations
• Top performers are recognised and their efforts rewarded through salary and development opportunities
• Consistent action is taken to address poor performance.

Looking Forward

Consultation with our employees has helped us build a workplace that supports the success of our business. We intend to continue and extend that consultation, and we are considering the following measures:

• Building on the success of our Graduate programme, we are exploring the possibility of introducing an undergraduate programme, apprenticeships and MBA programmes
• The implementation of a new employee survey to fully understand where we can make improvements
• A new process for performance-related reward has been introduced for selected grades. If successful, this process will be extended.
