Our Responsibilities The value of the Lottery

Lotteries create winners – we paid out nearly £3 billion in prizes in the UK last year. But our lotteries were also founded to raise funds that benefit society as a whole, generating money for good causes from the desire of players to take part in games of chance.

Why we all win
While the idea behind the lottery is nothing new – lotteries of various kinds have existed for centuries – we know that every advance in efficiency, innovation and marketing brings greater resources to the good causes we fund. So we are constantly looking for new ways in which the fun had by players of our games can be responsibly harnessed to the benefit of their community.

By operating our games, we create other benefits, too – to our 806 employees, to more than 28,800 retailers in the UK, to Government, our shareholders and other stakeholders.
