Our Responsibilities Carbon footprint
Supporting evidence
The energy we use contributes to the carbon footprint of our operations, and we have been committed to reducing our CO2 emissions over several years.
This year we achieved a 6.5% reduction in our net CO2 emissions compared to 2009/10, with significant savings in the area of fuel and power use.
The largest part of our carbon footprint comes from our retail estate. The 28,800 retailers in our UK network are each provided with high-performance electronic equipment to ensure that players have reliable access to lottery products.
This year we focused our efforts on those parts of our operations over which we have most direct control. We have made excellent progress in reducing emissions from energy use in our offices – in 2010/11, total energy use in our buildings was 5,710 Mwh, or 2,700 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions, 38% lower than the previous year. Fuel use by the sales fleet and in other business-related car travel was reduced by 24%, following a reduction of more than 50% in 2009/10.
See 'supporting evidence' on the left to access our carbon footprint, which is calculated using 2009 'Guidance on how to measure and report your greenhouse gas emissions' (DEFRA/DECC).
