Values & Culture

  • Living our values Living our values

We believe it’s important for our staff to understand how our values work in practice. We asked our staff to help us think about how those values translated into the day-to-day behaviours we need to exhibit in our work at Camelot.

  • Engaging with employees Engaging with employees

We believe it’s important to keep our staff informed of what’s going on in the business and find out what they think, particularly during this time of transition.

  • Reward & development Reward & development

We aim to achieve a high performance culture. We manage this through our performance management system, which is thoroughly embedded in our working life.

  • Employee participation Employee participation

We recognise that encouraging our employees to do their bit for the community is of benefit to the communities concerned and also motivates our employees and gives them opportunities to develop new skills.

We aim to be one of the best companies to work for in the UK by creating an environment in which people are rewarded for giving their best. Our challenge is to motivate employees to have pride in working for Camelot, particularly as we make the transition to the next lottery Licence. We also invest time and money in community projects and charities, and encourage employees to volunteer in their local communities.

The last year was an unusually challenging one for Camelot, as we had the task of maintaining the success of The National Lottery with no assurance that we would win the Licence Competition. Maintaining employees’ motivation in such circumstances – and providing the right environment to enable our staff to manage their careers and livelihoods – was very challenging. We are therefore pleased that we continue to be rated highly as an employer of choice. This year we were placed third in The Guardian’s list of Britain’s Top Employers – up from 13th place in 2007 – and for the third year running we were ranked in the Top 50 of the prestigious Sunday Times list of the 100 Best Companies To Work For.

The Guardian’s list is compiled using a range of criteria including pay and benefits, career and training, leadership, knowledge management, corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability. We were delighted to be awarded 100% for each of the last three categories. We also received the highest mark for our commitment to the careers and training of our staff, 81%, and it was noted that our employees receive "plenty of personalised support". We also received a score of 82% for leadership.

We were ranked 46th in the Sunday Times list, the third consecutive year we have been among their Top 50 companies .The Sunday Times survey placed us at 46th position, down from the previous year’s high of 13th. We feel, however, that the results were still very encouraging given the uncertainty of the third Licence.

Therefore we believe it’s important to keep our staff informed about what’s going on in the business and find out what they think, particularly at this time of change for the business. Read more about how we engage with our staff.
