Socio-economic impact

We are a relatively small company with just under 1,000 employees, but we have a turnover just short of £5 billion. Our role as operator of The National Lottery means that we touch the lives of millions of people across the UK and thousands of businesses. We have a significant impact on the economies and the communities of which we are a part.

We create jobs and develop the skills of our 978 (full-time equivalent) employees, we help our network of over 26,200 retailers and 800 suppliers expand their businesses and improve their profitability, we invest in local communities, we work closely with Government, our regulators and public interest groups. We provide a public service through our work to date in raising more than £21 billion for Good Causes so far – the result of our games being played on a regular basis by around 70% of the UK adult population. Indeed, 95% of the population recognises the National Lottery crossed fingers logo.

These different impacts show how the lottery depends on a two-way relationship between Camelot and each of its stakeholders.

For example, our revenues come from selling draw-based tickets, Scratchcards and online Instant Win Games, while we have paid out an average of 50p in every pound to prize-winners during our second Licence period.

Similarly, we depend on our more than 26,200 and more retailers to act as advocates for the lottery, to provide our products with a "shop window" and to help us make sure the lottery is run responsibly. In return, we provide them with a valuable source of income through commission payments, strong on-going support and a product which helps attract customers to their stores.
