Environmental impact

Managing impacts

We aim to manage our impact on the environment carefully and are continuing to improve our policies and practices to achieve this.

Involving others

We are working with all our main stakeholders to improve our overall environmental performance and to spread best practice.

Products & distribution

We can't reduce our overall environmental footprint unless we help our suppliers and retailers produce and distribute our products in a more sustainable way.

Energy & climate

We exceeded our targets for cutting our energy use and reducing carbon emissions, and are now the first major lottery operator in the world to become carbon neutral through the sponsorship of the world's first gold standard project.

Winning a prestigious 'Big Tick' under Business in the Community's EDF Energy Environmental Leadership Award was a big highlight last year.

94.17%

our ranking in the BITC Environmental Index climbed five points during the year, placing us in the Gold category of high performing companies. We were also leaders in our sector.

We report very detailed on our environmental performance over the last few years. Read more in Indicators.

main content

We are committed to careful environmental management. We may be a relatively small, specialist company, but we still think we have a vital part to play in tackling climate change and reducing waste.

As lottery operator it makes sense for us to ensure that the environmental benefits brought by Good Causes funding are not compromised in any way by the process of raising the money for that funding. We are therefore committed to ensuring that the environmental impact of the lottery is assessed and reduced at every possible level.

We apply this principle in our own operations and also work to bring a positive influence to bear on our various stakeholders - from suppliers and retail partners to other lottery operators around the world.

It is a source of great pride for all of us at Camelot that we have become the first major lottery operator in the world to become carbon neutral. This is just one of the many ways in which we aim to lead by example.

Our other major achievements include:

  • Significantly exceeding our target for reducing CO2 in 2006/7. Our carbon emissions were down 29% on the previous year, almost double the 15% target we set
  • Increasing our score in the Business in the Environment Index by more than 5% from 88.98% to 94.17%, putting us into the Gold category and top of the leisure and hotel sector. Our environmental score has doubled since we first took part in the Index in 2002
  • Being awarded a prestigious 'Big Tick' from Business in the Community for the EDF Energy Environmental Leadership Award. The 'Big Tick' is given to companies demonstrating that their approach to responsibility is having a positive impact on society and the company itself. It is difficult to win this accolade, which is judged by a panel of independent, experienced practitioners
  • Forming a senior level Environmental Steering Group which is looking into ways we can reduce our impact even further.
