reduction in the waste we’ve sent to landfill

Waste & water
Water use is not a significant issue for Camelot as we are not heavy users and currently have limited options to save.
From 2006/07 however water usage will be metered and closely monitored. We are participating in the initiative 'The big splash' (opens in a new window) to find out how we can save more water. Waste is one of our main environmental impacts and we are taking action to reduce the amount of our waste that goes to landfill by improving recycling at our main sites.
We set ourselves a target of reducing waste to landfill by 5% in 2005/6. In fact, we did slightly better than this, achieving cuts of 6% during the year. We have now set up recycling facilities in Northampton and Aintree, as well as London, for plastic, cans and paper, and our Green Team are planning to run campaigns on recycling in our main sites in 2006/7.
We have also set ourselves a new recycling target for 2006/07 which should enable us to reduce waste to landfill by a further 5%. This year we also aim to increase paper and plastic recycling by 10% (measured by total weight), and increase the proportion of total waste we recycle by 5%. We will work with the consultancy Envirowise (opens in a new window) on waste reduction initiatives.
During the year our Green team set some targets on waste and recycling. You can read more about these targets and our achievements in The Green Team.
Recycled paper
In 2004/5 we committed ourselves to reporting on the amount of paper used in making Scratchcards. We now receive monthly reports on the paper used in Scratchcards (in 2005/06 4,510,327 kg). We are now also able to report on the proportion of our total paper consumption coming from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council – opens in a new window) and recycled stock. This is helping us to report on overall paper use more accurately.
Importantly we have now moved to using recycled paper for draw–based lottery tickets and we use a high percentage of FSC accredited paper for our play slips. This is saving over 1,000 tonnes of virgin paper from non–sustainable sources a year. Some 95% of our office paper is recycled at the same plant that provides us with recycled stock for tickets. Read about how two of our suppliers helped us to move to recycled lottery tickets.
