We have made the commitment to becoming a carbon neutral company by investing in renewable electricty schemes and to offset the emissions we are producing from all other sources such as business travel, distribtution and gas consumption.

Energy & climate

We set targets to reduce our energy consumption and our CO2 emissions by 2% in 2005/6. The introduction of new IT hardware and cooling equipment however, meant that our energy consumption went up by 6% and this contributed to an overall increase in CO2 emissions by 2%.

We see tackling this as a priority. For the year ahead we have made two important commitments:

  • To reduce our own direct emissions by 15% through energy efficiency, greater use of renewable electricity and by continuing to replace the remainder of our car fleet with diesel cars*
  • To become a carbon neutral company by investing in renewable energy schemes to offset the emissions we are producing.

Work on these initiatives is already underway. We have switched to a new energy contract which means that, from October 2006, all our electricity in our main offices and sites will be generated by renewable hydropower sources which create no CO2.

Ahead of target, we have replaced 75% of cars used for essential business to diesel, which has already cut fuel emissions by 6%. The remaining 25% of the fleet will be converted in the next two years. Our Green Team also ran an energy saving campaign during the year, encouraging employees to switch off lights and monitors, and to use stairs rather than lifts in our buildings.

*Car fleet replacement is over the next two years
